Summer Choral Program – A Canadian Choral Odyssey


Join SING THE NORTH for our first ever in-person course – an intensive Summer Choral Program that will take you on a Canadian Choral Odyssey from Coast to Coast to Coast!

Don’t miss this rare chance to sing lilting folk tunes of the Maritimes and Prairies alongside some of Canada’s most iconic compositions, including Snowforms by R Murray Schafer, the hugely exciting Io, Io! by Jocelyn Morlock, the beautiful Emily Carr Suite by Brian Tate, and Vision Chant, featuring indigenous text by the Manitoba Cree composer, Andrew Balfour.

  • Dates: July 19-22 & 25-29 Weekdays only; daytime rehearsals at St Mary’s Church, Oak Bay. (In person with covid safety plan)
  • Final Concert: Friday July 29, 7pm at St Mary’s Church, Oak Bay (limited audience with n95 masks [provided] and social distancing; concert also livestreamed)

Repertoire – a Canadian Choral Odyssey

Singers can sing the full program, or can opt not to sing the advanced pieces (denoted with **). All are welcome!

Your Course Provision includes:

  • A Full Course Package, including your scores, audio files, and high-quality conducting videos featuring professional singers to help you learn your parts
  • Workshops with choral giants Brian Tate and Dr Adam Jonathan Con, and also with Kathryn Whitney
  • Full-choir rehearsals with Kathryn Whitney, Brian Tate, and Kimberley-Ann Bartczak
  • Sectionals by Voice type in large airy rooms to help you learn your music
  • Choir socials such as the lunchtime ‘Bring & Sing‘ concerts and an Evening Patio Social for all singers
  • Rehearsals in the beautiful large and airy venue of St Mary’s Church, Oak Bay, with high ceilings, windows that will be open, a courtyard for outdoor singing, and free parking in a peaceful Victoria suburb
  • A Joyous Final Live Concert to a limited live audience. Concert is also livestreamed.
  • Covid Safety Plan based on current international research to keep all singers as safe as possible, including:
    • Full indoor masking (spacious n95 masks provided), vaccination requirement, and recommended home rapid testing for choristers
    • Timetable designed with maximum 40-minute sessions and ample scheduled ventilation time to keep our air fresh
    • Limited places to ensure that there is ample room in our already large building
    • Hepa-filters in all rehearsal areas
    • Maximum 35 singers, working in a room with a 250 person capacity
    • Final concert with limited live audience with masks required for audience at the door.
    • Livestreamed to encourage safe enjoyment of the concert for all

OBSERVERS –  Non-singing participants. Price includes scores and timetable. You are welcome to listen to all rehearsals and workshops.
